Thistle is native mainly to the Mediterranean basin, while it is cultivated in the rest of Europe and South America. The first references to the plant were made by Theophrastus during the 4th c. BC where it is referred to as "Pternix". Dioskourides then recommends "Mega Centaurion", or "Silivon" for wound healing. The following is a report from Pliny the Elder, while during the Middle Ages many botanists recommended the plant for various uses. The English botanist Nicholas Culperer suggested it as an excellent remedy for bile and spleen, while in the early 20th century a school of herbalists called "Eclectic" used thistle extract for "Hepatic congestion". Finally, after 1960, the use of the plant spread widely, starting from Germany, where at the same time with its use, its research study began.
